As the German troops begin their campaign to “relocate” all the Jews of Denmark, Annemarie Johansen’s family takes in Annemarie’s best friend, Ellen Rosen, and conceals her as part of the family.
Through the eyes of ten-year-old Annemarie, we watch as the Danish Resistance smuggles almost the entire Jewish population of Denmark, nearly seven thousand people, across the sea to Sweden. The heroism of an entire nation reminds us that there was pride and human decency in the world even during a time of terror and war. Winner of the 1990 Newbery Medal.
Lois Lowry doesn’t waste any time in Number The Stars, starting in the opening chapter with Annemarie and Ellen’s frightening encounter with German soldiers. Lois Lowry creates the setting, characters and foreshadows to increases the tension of the story. The symbol of stars that Lois Lowry uses is beyond touching. When the crowd of escaping Jews gathers, they are comforted with the words of Psalm 147: “O praise the Lord… he who numbers the stars one by one.” “How can anyone number the stars?” Annemarie wonders. But she is one of the brave who is numbering the stars by saving their Jewish neighbors, one by one. In the ending, Annemarie vows to wear Ellen’s Star of David necklace till her friend returns.
The way Lois Lowry writes this will bring you to tears making it one of the best parts of the book. It shows that the Jewish Holocaust was very intense time and Lois Lowry did a great job in making it light enough for a children’s book. Throughout the book Annemarie learns about the power of evil, the strength of family, and as mentioned before the unbreakable bonds of friendship. Annemarie learns several lessons throughout the book that she’ll never forget. And thanks to Lois Lowry neither will we forget. This is an incredibly moving book. There are very few books that absolutely everyone should read. This is one of them.
