In Furiously Happy, #1 New York Times bestselling author Jenny Lawson explores her lifelong battle with mental illness. A hysterical, ridiculous book about crippling depression and anxiety? That sounds like a terrible idea.

“Some people might think that being ‘furiously happy’ is just an excuse to be stupid and irresponsible and invite a herd of kangaroos over to your house without telling your husband first because you suspect he would say no since he’s never particularly liked kangaroos. And that would be ridiculous because no one would invite a herd of kangaroos into their house. Two is the limit. I speak from personal experience. My husband says that none is the new limit. I say he should have been clearer about that before I rented all those kangaroos.

“Most of my favorite people are dangerously fucked-up but you’d never guess because we’ve learned to bare it so honestly that it becomes the new normal. Like John Hughes wrote in The Breakfast Club, ‘We’re all pretty bizarre. Some of us are just better at hiding it.’ Except go back and cross out the word ‘hiding."”

Furiously Happy is about “taking those moments when things are fine and making them amazing, because those moments are what make us who we are, and they’re the same moments we take into battle with us when our brains declare war on our very existence. It’s the difference between “surviving life” and “living life”. It’s the difference between “taking a shower” and “teaching your monkey butler how to shampoo your hair.” It’s the difference between being “sane” and being “furiously happy.”

That is a dynamic book! It reveals the founders’ questioning on many problems that aren’t understood nowadays. The founders came to their decisions thru reading many classic political manuscripts and their personal sturdy debates. This book chronicles the process that resulted inside the declaration of Independence and the constitution.

Today the integrity and unity of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution are under attack by the Progressive political movement. And yet, writes Larry P. Arnn:

“The words of the Declaration of Independence ring across the ages. The arrangements of the Constitution have a way of organizing our actions so as to produce certain desirable results, and they have done this more reliably than any governing instrument in the history of man. Connect these arrangements to the beauty of the Declaration and one has something inspiring and commanding.”

Dr. Arnn, president of Hillsdale College, reveals this integral unity of the Declaration and the Constitution. Together, they form the pillars upon which the liberties and rights of the American people stand. United, they have guided history’s first self-governing nation, forming our government under certain universal and eternal principles. Unfortunately, the effort to redefine government to reflect “the changing and growing social order” has gone very far toward success. Politicians such as Franklin Roosevelt found ways to condemn and discard the Constitution and to redefine the Declaration to justify government without limit. As a result, both documents have been weakened, their influence diminished, and their meaning obscured—paving the way for the modern administrative state, unaccountable to the will of the people.

Biography

Max Walker writes from a cozy apartment for the pure escape of it all. Since the age of 14, he was constantly getting lost in fantasy worlds with trips on the backs of dragons or voyages across the stars. When he isn’t writing, you can probably find him cuddling with his calico cat who might actually think she’s a dog (with all that constant tail-wagging), or cuddling with his dog who definitely thinks she’s a human.

This book really allowed me to understand that we are all different based more on our environments than by the colors or pigments of our skin tone. The environments in which we live allows us to utilize resources we have to in bettering our situations. This brings about innovations in our history and the progress of human beings.

In this “artful, informative, and delightful” (William H. McNeill, New York Review of Books) book, Jared Diamond convincingly argues that geographical and environmental factors shaped the modern world. Societies that had had a head start in food production advanced beyond the hunter-gatherer stage, and then developed religion –as well as nasty germs and potent weapons of war –and adventured on sea and land to conquer and decimate preliterate cultures.

Philosophy is to question everything. More than a lifestyle, larger than any single idea, broader than a conviction, philosophy is the love of exploration, of knowledge, of uncertainty, and of that cornerstone of free thinking: doubt. Kevin Perry’s “Philosophy” takes the reader on a grand tour of life’s biggest questions, examining all that the world’s greatest philosophers have said about life and death, love and loss, language, art and God, to name a few.

From reading just the title to reading the whole book, this is not about what you may think. Philosophy by Kevin Perry is an amazing reading of the great philosophers of our time and their beliefs that relate to the common interests that affect us all. Each chapter is about different topic and begins with a definition of the topic discussed in said chapter including a timeline of great people whose beliefs have been studied and followed for hundreds of years throughout history. The author essentially guides one through each chapter with intense questions about said topics. This is an enlightening, and easy read that is enjoyable to anyone and everyone.

This is not your typical long boring book on philosophy. This is a great coffee table book. As you could pick it up and skim a page or two and still come away with some knowledge or a conversation starter. This book is divided into 10 chapters. Each one is a different subject of philosophy. Life, Death, Art, Knowledge, Time, language, Love, God, Self and Free will. Each Chapter is then subdivided into 8 philosophers ideas on that particular subject. Each philosopher has two to three pages in the chapter with a quote and an explanation, that is easy to understand. At the end of the book there is a brief bio on each philosopher, giving you background information and some more insight. All in all an easy read and a great book to have around.

Training the Best Dog Ever, originally published in hardcover as The Love That Dog Training Program, is a book based on love and kindness. It features a program of positive reinforcement and no-fail techniques that author Dawn Sylvia-Stasiewicz used to train the White House dog, Bo Obama, and each of Senator Ted Kennedy’s dogs, among countless others.

Training the Best Dog Ever relies on trust and treats, not choke collars; on bonding, not leash-yanking or reprimanding. The five-week training program takes only 10 to 20 minutes of practice a day and works both for puppies and for adult dogs that need to be trained out of bad habits. Illustrated with step-by-step photographs, the book covers hand-feeding; crate and potty training; and basic cues—sit, stay, come here—as well as more complex goals, such as bite inhibition and water safety. It shows how to avoid or correct typical behavior problems, including jumping, barking, and leash-pulling. Plus: how to make your dog comfortable in the world—a dog that knows how to behave in a vet’s office, is at ease around strangers, and more. In other words, the best dog ever.
